Ovation Magazine Cover

Howdy!

This is a cover illustration I created for the Kirkland Performance Center. Every year when they release their new season of shows they publish an issue of their Ovation magazine. For this cover, the tagline is "Family Matters Here" and they wanted an image showing performers thanking the audience. KPC had a pretty solid idea of what they were looking for, but I sketched a few different designs just to give them options.

They liked both sketches A and B, so I did tighter drawings to flesh out the details and compositions.

The client chose design A, so I did two quick color studies...

And then painted up the final amd KPC performed their graphic design magic and there you have it!

Theseus and the Minotaur

Last week, I was thinking about Greek mythology and I doodled this little drawing of the Minotaur. It's really small and loose, but I was digging the proportions of the Minotaur and the idea of wrapping his horns around the text.

I used my favorite Bic pen to lay out the line work and then I shaded with ink washes. I wanted to somehow include the magic ball of thread that leads Theseus to the Minotaur,  originally it snaked around a maze of arches that made up the background. I didn't want to lose the silhouette, so I used the thread as a border instead. It was fun to switch up my process and move quickly from the sketch to the final and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Thanks for visiting!

Georgia and the Alligators

Howdy!

I was hired by Rainbow Rumpus magazine to create this illustration for a short story called "Georgia and the Alligators." As you can see, Georgia has a rough and tumble time dealing with an elevator full of alligators, check out the full story here:

Here are a few preliminary sketches showing my process. I drew these thumbnail sketches to very roughly show composition and content.

The client chose sketch A, so I created this final line drawing. When they approved it, I created the final illustration you see above.

Rainbow Rumpus is a great magazine with content geared toward kids who have LGBT parents. This is the third time I've had the honor to work with them and it's always a blast. Thanks for visiting my blog!

The Tiger King

Here's a little illustration I did over the holidays. I was experimenting with mixing gouache and ink alongside one of my favorite mediums, the Bic pen. The story I made up for this painting is that the man is stealing the crown from the sleeping Tiger King. If he successfully makes off with the crown he will become king. If he fails he will be eaten by the Tiger King. Then again, maybe they'll bond over their love of magical gold jewelry and start their own show on QVC. Who knows?
